Frank Lloyd Wrights Martin House North American Reciprocal Museum NARM Association®

A handful of projects have even been constructed completely posthumously, like a mausoleum in Buffalo built in 2004. The Martin House Complex gave Wright his first opportunity to design not just one house, but a series of interrelated buildings. Kentuck Knob, completed in 1956, is an extraordinary example of Wright’s “Usonian” style, a group of approximately 60 homes he designed from the mid-1930s onward characterized by native materials, flat roofs and large cantilevered overhangs. Situated just below the crest of a hill, Kentuck Knob’s construction materials of native sandstone and tidewater red cypress blend naturally with the surroundings.

This exhibit was reconstructed in a building specifically designed to house the iconic office. When visitors enter, they feel they have walked into the office after the staff stepped out for lunch. Tall windows, in what was a second-floor office, look out on a scene that replicates what clients and Wright himself would have seen. During this docent-led, 90-minute experience, your group will explore more than 27,000 sf of planting beds over the 1.5-acre Martin House estate during the seasonal Landscape Tour.

Since then, the original Frank Lloyd Wright designed footprint has been restored and all of the breathtaking details have come alive once again. When Frank Lloyd Wright passed away in 1959, he didn’t only leave behind one of the greatest architectural legacies of any American designer, but also numerous unfinished projects. In the years after his death, other architects stepped in to oversee the completion of a dozen or so in-progress projects, like the Marin County Civic Center or the Socrates Zaferiou House.

It is composed of a series of concrete planters with built-in watering mechanisms, as well as a hand-crank system for opening panels in the skylight. Free street parking is available for small vans and cars in the neighborhood. Large buses and motorcoaches have a nearby designated off-site parking area. Directions to this area will be supplied to the group leader and detailed in your group confirmation information.
